Item Overview

Description

EMILE GALLE (1846-1904)

Exceptional pedestal table known as "Libellules" in moulded and carved walnut with superimposed, multi-lobed, large bordered tops decorated in a marquetry of exotic wood with a motif of branches in a countryside set into three carved legs decorated with dragonflies.
Signed and dated in the background "Gallé" 1900.
H : 30 in. Diam : 25 ½ in.
Gallé made his first pedestal table with a dragonfly base in 1894 however none of the reproductions of this model are available today.
A second version, with a rectangular top and four dragonflies was made in 1897 then a third in 1900, the model that we are presenting, composed of a tripod base and clover shaped shelves and which was the one shown in the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris.
The dragonfly theme was present from the very beginning in Gallé's creations, both in glassware and in cabinet making and was at first, a synonym of beauty and lightness however it became a darkened approaching symbolism as the artist reached the end of his life.
With the pedestal table, that we are presenting, the grace and lightness of the insect becomes an integral part of this refined and delicate table.
The "frissonnante" dragonfly is presented with open wings, immobile for an instant, proof of Gallé's power of nature observation.
The coincidence between furniture and its decoration is constant during his career as well as his botanical knowledge concerning plants and insects.
These different pedestal tables met with an immense success and the dragonfly became the theme for one of his last pieces of furniture before his death, the dragonfly cabinet in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
