Item Overview

Description

A squadron of Dutch ships, a capriccio view of the Tafelberg, Cape Town, beyond oil on canvas, unframed 47.4 x 74.3 cm. NOTES Hoogerheyden was himself a sailor, before becoming a respected Dutch marine artist of the second half of the eighteenth and first years of the nineteenth centuries. He spent most of his life in Middelburg, the provincial capital of Zeeland, and many of his works depict harbour scenes of the region around that city (P. Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1950, I, 1969, p. 505).
