Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Keyser completed his studies in Europe, first with Widmann at the Royal Academy of Munich, and then with Albert Wolff at the Royal Academy in Berlin. He won a silver medal at the Berlin Academy Exhibition in 1876 for his figure of Psyche, now at the Cincinnati Art Museum, and he returned to Baltimore in 1877 to teach at the Maryland Institute of Art.
