Item Overview

Description

Ernestine Betsberg (MO/NY, 1909-2007), "La Cupola"
acrylic on canvas, artist monogram at upper left and on the verso, retains Somerhill gallery tag, framed with linen liner.
DOA 49 x 46.5 in.

Ernestine is a masterful colorist. In a 2006 interview, she describes her love of color as being "very insidious; it's very involved. If you look at the world, there is color all around, even though a lot of people don't see it. I don't think I could get along without the color in my paintings." ("Never, Unless Invited" by Susan Caba, St. Louis Magazine, October 2006). She and her artist husband, Art Osver, met while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. They traveled throughout Europe on various fellowships. This painting depicts a park gazebo in Rome.
