A SUPERB BLUE AND WHITE 'PRUNUS' GINGER JAR

Kangxi

Of ovoid shape, finely painted with clustered groups of prunus blossoms floating on a deep ultramarine-blue 'cracked ice' ground below a narrow band of chevron at the shoulder, and an unglazed shoulder edge and sloping cylindrical neck, a biscuit foot ring and a glazed slightly convex base.


8 3/4in (22.2cm) high

Condition Report

Generally, in excellent overall condition. A few small nibbles and frits to the rim interior edge. The interior with the often-seen small star-cracks common to this type but not compromising to the body. Highly recommended.

The present lot, known by the conventional term 'ginger jar' is a typical example of Kangxi period blue and white porcelain, and was extremely popular in Europe in the 19th century. See a similar blue and white 'prunus' ginger jar and cover, Kangxi period, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, accessioned in 1886 from James Orrock (acc.no. 274&A-1886). Another two similar blue and white 'prunus' ginger jars and covers, also from the Kangxi period, are illustrated in A. du Boulay,
The Taft Museum: Its History and Collections, Vol. II, New York, 1995, pp.578-579.
