Artist or Maker

Literature

G.S. Keyes, Esaias van de Velde 1587-1630, Doornspijk, 1984, no. D. 93, pl. 102.

Provenance

Baron Prisse, Huis de Hondsdonk, Ulvenhout (as Avercamp, according to I.Q. van Regteren Altena's collection notes).

Notes

Originally part of the same sketchbook as the previous lot. Keyes felt that the present drawing was one of the most ambitious and successful in the sketchbook. He suggested that the location may be The Hague, comparing it to Jan van Goyen's Panoramic View of The Hague (1652; H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen 1596-1656: Ein Oeuvreverzeichnis, Amsterdam, 1973, II, no. 329). If so, the church seen in the distance of the present drawing can be identified as the Sint-Jacobskerk, The Hague.
