Description

DESCRIPTION: Essie Leone Seavey-Lucas (American, 1872-1932). Miss Bertha Hanover. Oil on canvas. Depicts the horse Hanover's Bertha at the age of four standing in a field of green grass at the Hanover Stables in Hanover, PA. Signed, lower left. Inscribed "L.A. Gleitsman," lower right. This horse was the winner of the Hambletonian in 1930 under driver-trainer Tom Berry and later became the first winner to produce another winner of the race. In a faux gold leaf frame with a brass plaque that is marked, "Miss Bertha Hanover/4 Yrs., 2.00." Also included is a Hambletonian cartoon featuring the horse as well as a whip that was used with her. The artist was born in Vermont and began painting animals at a young age. She studied under Scott Leighton who was considered the most noted painter of animals in the East. MEASUREMENTS: 22-1/4" x 30-1/8". Overall with frame 26-1/2" x 34-1/2". CONDITION: Paint loss in the sky and possible inpainting at the left side.

All property is sold "as is", and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, or description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. For buyers attending the live auction, all merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction, no exceptions. For live auction purchases, Cordier Antiques & Auctions accepts cash, pre-approved personal checks and business checks as payment.

All purchases are subject to 6% Pennsylvania state sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Pennsylvania sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states are accepted if presented with a business card or letterhead.

We reserve the right to withdraw any property before the sale and shall have no liability whatsoever for such withdrawal.
