EUGÈNE VALLIN (Herbévilliers, 1856 - Nancy, 1922) Exceptionnelle paire de chevets-vitrines "Masson-Bachelard", c.1904 Bois de padouk, ou santal, mouluré et sculpté en quart de cercle. Le meuble ouvre en partie haute par une porte vitrée galbée qui dévoile une étagère en verre et trois tiroirs. En partie basse, une porte révèle un fond en marbre blanc. Son sommet est coiffé d'un fronton se terminant par des volutes à gorge formant une niche. Les deux pieds antérieurs sont subtilement mouvementés. Poignées des tiroirs « roseaux » et boutons de portes en laiton doré. Époque Art Nouveau. Haut. 186 Larg. 68 Prof. 53 cm. (Petits accidents). UN CHEF-D’OEUVRE ART NOUVEAU Parmi les grands mécènes de la période Art Nouveau, Jean-Baptiste Eugène Corbin fait figure de parangon. Ayant fait fortune avec sa chaîne de grands magasins, il emploie les plus célèbres figures de l’École de Nancy parmi lesquelles Majorelle, Daum ou Prouvé. En 1903, son beau-frère et associé Charles Masson fait appel à Eugène Vallin, assisté de Victor Prouvé, pour la réalisation d’une exceptionnelle salle à manger aujourd’hui exposée au musée de l’École de Nancy, ancienne maison Corbin. Un an plus tard, en février 1904, lors du mariage de sa fille Renée Masson (Nancy, 1885 - Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1968) avec l’avocat et gérant des magasins réunis Pierre Bachelard (Sarreguemines, 1877-1970), Vallin reçoit la commande d’une salle à manger et d’une chambre à coucher pour l’appartement que le jeune couple occupe au 8, rue Mazagran à Nancy. Les dessins aquarellés de l’artiste révèlent l’importance de cette commande, dont la salle à manger est d’ailleurs présentée à l’Exposition des arts décoratifs de Nancy en octobre de la même année. Après que le couple Masson-Bachelard ait quitté Nancy, le lit, l’armoire, la coiffeuse et cette paire de chevets seraient vendus à un certain Alphonse Gaudin, 97 rue Charles III à Nancy. Les meubles sont ensuite vendus aux enchères à l’hôtel des ventes de la rue du sergent Blandan à Nancy, en 1956 (selon Charpentier) ou au début des années 1960 (selon les acheteurs). C’est un couple d’universitaires nancéiens qui fait l’acquisition des chevets : Pierre Danchin, professeur agrégé d’anglais, futur président de l’Université de Nancy II et son épouse Georgette mère d’une famille nombreuse. Leurs enfants se souviennent avec précision de l’arrivée des chevets chez eux au début des années 1960. Le lit et l’armoire sont vendus une nouvelle fois aux enchères le 25 mars 1982. Le Musée d’Orsay ne s’y trompe pas et acquiert alors le lit Bachelard-Masson (OAO 710) et son armoire (OAO 711), exposés en salle 64 du musée. Sans décor figuratif cette chambre doit sa beauté à l’utilisation d’un bois exotique particulièrement précieux : le padouk. Nos chevets, aux dimensions tout à fait inhabituelles, illustrent la période « expressive » d’Eugène Vallin. L’artiste simplifie ses lignes et se tourne vers la stylisation. Sur nos meubles, la « gaine de Vallin », l’une des grandes constantes de son art, fait la liaison entre le fronton et la porte vitrée. Elle est le théâtre d’un jeu de lignes où l’on imagine le motif végétal dans ses volutes moulurées (Descouturelle, image n°28, p. 97). Le lit et le reste du mobilier de cette chambre, sont bien plus que des instruments de repos. Comme l’écrit Frédéric Descouturelle dans sa monographie consacrée à l’artiste, ils sont « un formidable vaisseau voguant sur la mer des songes ». LA SUITE SUR ROUILLAC.COM

The French version takes precedence in the event of any difficulties of interpretation

- PAYMENT
Sales are expressly concluded in return for immediate cash payment.
Buyer's premium:
24% IAT regardless of the lot.
Payment is made by card or bank transfer.
If the buyer fails to payin full within the thirty
days following the sale, the seller can request
that the goods be resubmitted for auction
within three months, at the expense of the defaulting bidder ('revente sur folle enchère'). The
latter must bear the cost of any unfavourable difference inprice between their bid at the initial
auction and the price obtained at the second
auction, as well as all costs incurred by second
auction. No advantage can be drawn from any
favourable difference in price at the second auction,which shall be wholly payable to the seller.
No reimbursement can be made for amounts
paid by the buyer before the seller and
ROUILLAC SAS have settled all amounts owing
to them. There-submission of goods for auction
following the default of a bidder in no way prevents the sellers and ROUILLAC SAS taking
legal action for damages against the defaulting
bidder.

III - EXPORT LICENCE
The process of obtaining an export licence can
take 5 to 10 weeks, a period which can be significantly reduced by the buyer's prompt communication of its instructions to the Auction
House, which cannot be held responsible for either the delay or the decision.
Purchases and Deliveries within the EEC
Buyers subject to EEC regulations (citizens of
an EEC member country) must provide the
auctioneer with their VAT identification number as well as the shipping details for the purchased items according to the thresholds
current onthe day of sale.
IV- BIDDING
1 - In the Auction Room
Bids are made using a numbered paddle, which
can be obtained prior to the auction upon registration of the applicant (proof of identification may be required) and the deposit of a blank
signed cheque made out to ROUILLAC SAS. The
paddle number of the last bidder will be called
by the auctioneer.

B) SELECT YOUR LOTS.
On our website, select in the MENU "BUY" or
"LIVE, ORDER AND TELEPHONES"
Choose the sale and enter the lots on which you
want to bid from a distance.
Click "Enter Auction" and check your choice:
1. Absentee bids within the limit you have set
2. Telephone order-for lots whose estimate is
more than 1 000 €.
3. Live bidding at no extra charge.
C) BID FREE OF CHARGE ON THE DAY OF
THE SALE
Log on rouillac.com with your login and click on
the red LIVE button to participate in the sale. An
offset of the sound is perceptible. Rely on the
auction rhythm that appears on the screen.
3 - WARNING !
Absentee bid, telephone lines and / or live participation will be taken at the latest at the end of
the exhibition schedules.
No purchase order will be registered without the
presentation of an identity document, bank references and complete contact details. In the
event of any uncertainty as to the identity or the
guarantee of the issuer, Rouillac Auction house
reserves the right to refuse certain requests.
Since the physical presence at the auction is the
normal mode for bidding, the Rouillac Auction
House and its experts do not bind themselves in
case of error, omission, or poor execution of an
absentee bid, telephone line or live participation.
4 - LIABILITY
In the event of a double bid which is confirmed
as such by the auctioneer, the lot will be resubmitted for sale and all interested parties present
may bid against each other in this econd auction.
All items or paintings are sold by the auctioneer
and, if required, by the assisting expert, according to the specifications indicated in the catalogue and taking into account any corrections
announced at the time the lot is presented and
recorded in the sale report.
Compensation cannot be claimed for restorations, defects and accidents, all items being exhibited to allow for inspection beforehand. No
warranty is offered as to the condition of marbles or frames. With regard to paintings, the specification "oil" is guaranteed, but the support
may be board, cardboard or canvas. The remounting of a painting is considered to be a
conservation measure and not a fault. The dimensions, weight, origin, period, and provenance
of an item are given as a guide only.
All lots are sold without any form of guarantee:
they are sold as is, in the condition they are
found in, the series of exhibitions prior to the
auctions allowing buyers to form their own opinion as to the condition of items. This offers in
particular an opportunity to check that each
lot matches the catalogue description, this
description being only a guide and implying no
liability whatsoever.
5- COLLECTING PURCHASES
If paying by non-certified cheque from a French
bank, delivery of items shall be deferred until
the funds are cleared. From time of the fall of
the hammer, the successful bidder bears sole
responsibility for the purchased item. All items
must without exception be removed the evening
of the day of sale, buyers are advised to provide
detailed instructions in writing regarding the delivery of their purchases, subject to the discharge of their bought note.
Lots that have not been collected before midnight of the day of sale will be removed and stored
in the Auction House's storage facility in Vendôme. Transportation and storage costs will be
borne by the buyer. It is the buyer's responsibility to insure his other purchases, ROUILLAC
Auction House accepting no responsibility for
damage caused to the item from the time the
hammer falls.
All administrative processes and transportation
are at the buyer's expense and remain his or her
exclusive responsibility.

Sold items are kept free of charge for two weeks
following the sale. After 10working days, storage
fees of €10 + VAT per day and per lot will be
charged, plus additional insurance fees relative
to the value of the item.
