Ces porte-torchères en bois doré prennent la forme d’une sirène dénudée à longue queue bifide qui s’enlace et repose sur des rochers. D’un bras, elles soutiennent un réceptacle en forme de coquille. L’extrême finesse de la sculpture, l’expressivité des visages ainsi que le sujet traité permettent de rapprocher nos œuvres des réalisations de Filippo Parodi (1630-1702), le plus important sculpteur génois du style baroque à la fin du XVIIe siècle. Parodi réalisa des sculptures en bois présentant de fortes similitudes avec notre paire de torchères et notamment au niveau du socle. Ainsi, le Palazzo del Principe de Gênes conserve une très belle suite de quatre torchères posées sur un tertre rocheux comparable à ceux figurant sous nos sirènes. La Villa Durazzo possède une torchère figurant l’Eté avec ce même socle rocailleux, tout comme le Palais Doria Pamphile à Rome avec deux sculptures illustrant des tritons et des aigles. À noter qu’il reprit cette structure rocailleuse pour d’autres réalisations comme pour une console et son miroir conservés à la Villa Durazzo Ce type de socle, toujours surmonté de figures sculptées dans le plus pur style baroque, fut récurrent dans l’Œuvre de Parodi, au point même que son fils, Domenico, ne put s’empêcher de reprendre à son compte cette iconographie, considérée comme un véritable héritage esthétique. Ses œuvres, souvent traitées dans l’esprit du Bernin auprès duquel il fit son apprentissage à Rome entre 1655 et 1661, ont su ainsi conquérir une riche clientèle, amatrice de la grande beauté et de l’exubérance du baroque. Son talent, reconnu dans toute l’Italie le fit travailler également à Padoue à la Basilique Saint- Antoine ou encore à Venise pour le monument funéraire de l’évêque Morosini. Son art fut également apprécié par les Princes de Liechtenstein pour lesquels il réalisa deux bustes figurant les Vices

For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted.
