Notes

Lorentzen and fellow Dane Erik Paulsen (1749-90) began travelling to Norway in 1788, recording the dramatic landscapes they found there. These were popularised as a series of prints (known as voyages pittoresques) made by Georg Haas (1751-1817) and Heinrich Grosch (1763-1843), which were often dedicated to the Norwegian and Danish Royal families. By contrast, the paintings, such as the present example, are extremely rare.

Lorentzen was a landscape painter and portraitist, and a teacher of influence at the Copenhagen Kunstakadamiet. His pupils included Martinus Rørbye, Matthias Stoltenberg, and most famously Johann Christian Dahl (see lots 302-304).

An aquatint (29 by 39cm.) after the present painting by Georg Haas is sold with this lot (fig. 1).
