By whom (anonymously) sold(?), London, Christie's, 25 July 1938, lot 99 (as by Cornelis Poelenburgh), together with another work representing The discovery of Calisto, to J. Paul Getty (for 15.15 Pounds);
J. Paul Getty, Sutton Place, Surrey, donated to the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1970 (inv. no. 70.PB.9).

Notes

SOLD BY THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM TO BENEFIT FUTURE PAINTING ACQUISITIONS

Although previously attributed to Cornelis van Poelenburch (1594/5-1667), Horst Gerson was the first who (verbally) suggested the attribution to Van der Lisse in 1964.

This painting is evidently related to a composition by Poelenburch in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (inv. no. 549), which is signed and dated 1659.[1] A signed version of the same scene by Van der Lisse is in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. [2]
