NOTE

Domenico Pellegrini was born in Galliera in Italy and studied first in Venice and then in Rome under Domenico Corvi. He came over to London in 1792 and joined the schools of the Royal Academy where he was encouraged by his fellow Italian Francesco Bartolozzi (whose portrait by Pellegrini is in Venice). He continued to exhibit in England until 1812 and also visited Lisbon, probably encouraged by Bartolozzi who had settled there. Later he moved to Rome.

This fine picture is amongst the first which he exhibited at the Royal Academy and shows the influence of his training in Venice.
