NOTE

We are very grateful to Rhea Blok of the Fondation Custodia, Paris, for providing the earlier provenance information for this drawing. The sheet was originally part of a sketchbook of some 55 topographical views and landscape capricci, made by Valckenborch during a journey through South Germany and the Tyrol in 1598-9 (see E. Benesch (ed.), 'Frederick van Valckenborch. Part V', in Otto Benesch. From an Art Historian's Workshop, Lucerne 1979, pp. 45-76). A comparable drawing from the sketchbook is in the Lugt Collection at the Institut Néerlandais, Paris (see K. G. Boon, The Netherlandish and German Drawings of the Frits Lugt Collection, 3 vols., Paris 1992, cat. 210, reproduced vol. III, pl. 227).
