CATALOGUE NOTE

From 1563 to 1567, Sustris was in Florence, where he worked as an assistant to Vasari and, like him, had a brilliant career as a court artist. In 1568, he was called to Augsburg by Anton Fugger, but later went to Landschut, where he served Wilhelm, the Bavarian crown prince. When Wilhelm became Duke, Sustris moved to Munich, and stayed there from 1580 until his death in 1599, supervising all artistic activity, from painting and sculpture to applied arts and garden design.
