In 1900 Heyerdahl left Oslo for Paris with his lover and wife-to-be Olga Westergaard, where they remained until 1907. Heyerdahl's blossoming relationship with Olga defines this period, his paintings invariably set in Montmartre and depicting Olga and himself. Following the birth of their daughter Olga-Mira in February 1901, Heyerdahl often included all three of them, as in the present work.
