kakemono, depicting a gathering of courtiers, in ink and colour on silk, with lacquer weights, fitted with double boxes, one with an attestation by one of his pupils Tanryo, the painting signed Nancho hyakusaku kore ichi, Meiji jugo nen jugatsu tsuitachi [15th year of Meiji, October lst], Kawabe Mitate kin zu with two seals, the inner box signed Fujiwara Shiken ho Chokufu Eizan no zu and interior signed by Tanryo, with two attestation letters by Tanryo and Norimasa

NOTE

The same year this painting was executed Kawabe entered it into Kaiga Kyoshinkai, this is attested in a letter by his pupil Tanryo. He described how much he respected the artist and how he became his student in 1883.

Kawabe Mitate was born to a samurai family, in Chikugo province, Kyushu. He studied both Kano and Tosa painting. After the Meiji Restoration, he won many prizes in domestic art shows. He was one of the founding members of Toyo Kaige Kyoshi Kai. One of his paintings depicting Nambokucho war is in the Tokyo National Museum.
