Notes

Important work for the 'Insektensekte', similar to the sculpture 'Vlindermonument' Reneman made in 1968 for 'Het Diakonessenhuis' in Eindhoven. Max Reneman was an artist, a dentist as well as the chairman of the artists' association 'De Keerkring' in Amsterdam. He exhibited on a regular basis in the 'New Wing' of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. In the 60's and 70's he and his friends, the artists Theo Kley and Robert Jasper Grootveld, also known as the 'antirookmagiër', initiated many different 'Provo' projects such as 'Deskundologisch Laboratorium' and the 'Expertological' Lab'. They examined ordinary phenomena. With 'De Insekten sekte' (the Sect of the Insects) they organized open air meetings nearby the hippy village Ruigoord in the Houtrakpolder, Amsterdam, and composed the 'Vlinderopera' (Butterfly Opera). Other projects: 'Het Amsterdams Ballon Gezelschap' (The Amsterdam Balloon Society), 'Het Jeroen Bosch Gezelschap', The Committee 2000', the 'Stichting Openbaar Kunstgebit' (Foundation of Public Dentures'). Everybody could participate in the activities, which were funny, shocking and anarchic and friendly at the same time. Although the members of the Insekten Sekte were serious about social problems such as environmental pollution, aircraft noise a.s.o. they always expressed their concern in a surprising way. During the Bed-in for Peace of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which took place from 25th to 31st March 1969 at the Amsterdam Hilton in the bed of room 902, the presidential suite – a symbolic gesture of protest against the Vietnam war and support for world peace, the members of the Insekten Sekte presented the 'Butterfly flag' to John and Yoko. Besides his extravagant provo activities and besides his work as a dentist Max Reneman was a 'regular' artist. In 1960 he constructed a wall with stained glass and a column with relief for the catholic church Kanaleneiland, Utrecht. He also made monumental works commissioned by local authorities such as a sculpture for the building of a new swimming pool in Rotterdam, a work for the city of Groningen and a trophy for the annual World Press-Photo winner in 1972.And it was Max Reneman who introduced Fritzi ten Harmsen van der Beek to the Boekenbal of 1956, where Remco Campert was immediately struck by her.
