Item Overview

Description

Pen and black ink with gray wash. This elaborate scene of a victorious army near a castle with a city in the background could be related to the vast fresco with episodes from the life of Alfonso d'Aragona, painted by Fischetti in the Palazzo Maddaloni, Naples. This cycle can been dated to no later than 1770 (see N. Spinosa, Pittura napoletana del Settecento, Naples 1986, vol.II, no.205, figs.267-268). A similar arrangement of winged allegorical figures supporting a coat-of-arms can be seen in the bozzetto, formerly on the New York art market, for the artist's painting of The Triumph of Lamba Doria, in the Palazzo Doria d'Angri, Naples (see Spinosa, op.cit., cat.221, pl.49).
