Lot 106: Fedele Fischetti (Naples 1734-1789)

The Madonna and Child with Saints Anthony of Padua and Januarius oil on canvas 303/4 x 19 5/8 in. (76.5 x 49.8 cm.) PROVENANCE The Royal House of Savoy. Anon. Sale, Christie's, New York, 7 October 1993, lot 5, as Pietro Bardellino (sold $18,400). NOTES We are grateful to Professor Riccardo Lattuada for the attribution; he notes that the picture is datable to circa 1760, when the works of Fischetti and Bardellino, to whom this painting used to be attributed, are stylistically extremely similar, influenced by de Mura. The present painting is, however, recognisably by the former in details such as the putti, decorated with Saints' symbols, the handling of the features of the Virgin, and of the drapery.
