Notes

This drawing was probably made while Federico Zuccaro was traveling in Northern Europe and is an example of the artist copying another master's work, a standard practice. It has previously been thought to be a copy after Holbein, but there is no known surviving portrait to justify this. The attribution to Zuccaro was confirmed by James Mundy at the time of the Christie's sale in 1995.
