The Austrian portraitist Ferdinand Krumholz was the official painter to the Portuguese court, resident in Lisbon. He worked for the Imperial family in Rio de Janeiro between 1848 and 1853, and the present portrait may date to this Brazilian sojourn. His most celebrated portrait (of Dom Pedro II) is in the Belvedere, Vienna. Krumholz accompanied Buvelot to India in 1854 (see lot 67).
