NOTE

Pupil of the Academic artists Barrias and Cabanel, Pelez began his career by exhibiting large historical paintings, often with classical subjects, such as the present work. Later, under the influence of Bastien-Lepage, Pelez became interested in Realist subject matter.
This is a reduced version of the painting exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1875, no. 1608, titled Les Tireurs d'Arc.
