PROVENANCE:
Sale, Semenzato, Venice, 1 July 2007, lot 56

The present painting has been fully attributed to Fenzoni by Giordano Viroli, who describes the picture as an "esempio notevole e particolarmente attraente dello stile tardo del pittore Ferraù Fenzoni, artista a cui il dipinto va riferito senza possibilità di equivoci". The canvas, which can be ascribed to the later production of Fenzoni, shows his typical late dramatic chiaroscuro and the influence of Michelangelo's anatomical models revisited in a Mannerist key.

The subject of the God the Father in benediction is particularly frequent in the painter's production: particularly close to the present picture is the work painted for the Cappella di San Francesco in Forlì, now in the Pinacoteca Civica of the same city.
