Description

Fine Louis XVI ormolu mounted mahogany vide poche

circa 1775, attributed to jean-henri riesener

The rectangular top with hinged flap raised on columnar stiles continuing to fluted legs, raised on round tapered capped feet joined by an entwined shaped stretcher; the whole outlined with ormolu. NOTE: Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) became one of the most celebrated ebenistes of late eighteenth century Paris. A poor German immigrant, he moved to Paris and apprenticed with Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763). Soon after Oebens death Riesener married his widow and was received as master ébéniste in January 1768. A comparable vide poche also know as a Table à ouvrage or tricoteuse by Riesener was reputedly made for Marie Antoinette. This model now in the Musée du Louvre, see F. J. B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, London, 1793, fig. 134.
