FIVE ARCHAISTIC JADE SWORD AND SCABBARD DECORATIONS

Late Qing Dynasty

Comprising a scabbard slide carved in Han style with raised bosses on the upper surface with a 'tiger' face on one end, the underside carved with the rectangular slide opening, the pale green stone stained black in areas; a sword guard decorated in low relief densely organized bosses within line borders, the gray stone stained black in areas; a scabbard ornament decorated with densely organized bosses on the upper side, the underside carved with rectangular opening for sliding, the pale celadon stone stained black in areas; a small sword guard decorated in low relief
ruyi scrolls withing line borders, the yellow stone stained brown in areas; a scabbard chape decorated on each side with an incised
taotie mask within line borders on each side, the pale stone stained brown in areas. (5)


Scabbard slide: 3 1/16in (7.8cm) wide;
Sword guard: 3in (7.6cm) wide;
Scabbard ornament: 2 5/16in (5.9cm) wide;
Small sword guard: 2in (5cm) wide;
Scabbard chape: 1 9/16in (4cm) wide

Chinese Jades: Ming Dynasty to Early Twentieth Century, From the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco, 2007, p. 202, no. 212, described as early 20th century.
