Notes

From 1888 onwards, Floris Verster and Menso Kamerling Onnes shared a studio in Vreewijk, where they worked till 1891. As Christiaan Vogelaar points out in his book on the artist, Verster's studio was decorated with mirrors and glass vases to catch the sparkling effects of light, this being an essential aspect of his art. In the same year 1888, Verster also painted a watercolour of the studio of Kamerlingh Onnes (see Vogelaar, illustration 34).

The present lot can be compared to a similar etching, illustrated in: C. Vogelaar, Floris Verster, Leiden/Oegstgeest 2002, no. 14 on p. 142
