Item Overview

Description

German draughtsman and painter Philipp Otto van Runge was an important representative of German Romanticism. In 1795, he began his apprenticeship in trade at his brother Daniel's company in Hamburg. From 1799 onwards, his brother provided him with the financial support needed in order to study painting with master Jens Juel of the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. He moved to Dresden in 1801 to continue his studies and that is where he came in contact with the works of Jakob Böhme. In 1803 he met Goethe, to whom he became bound in a close friendship based on their common interest in colour and art, which made for a vast correspondence between them in 1805. Runge was a mystical and profoundly Christian thinker, while in his art he strove to express the principles of universal harmony through the symbolism of colours, shapes and numbers. The three primary colours (red, yellow, blue) represented to him a symbol of the Holy Trinity.
