Description

Portrait of the clipper ship "Norway" of New York in a storm. Titled on reverse "Ship 'Norway' passing Sandy Hook, E.N.E. Gale Nov. 28, 1862." She was built in 1869 by Trask & Dearborn and was 210' long. On the return passage of her maiden voyage she loaded 1,037 Chinese coolies at Macao to transport to Havana, and upon arrival reported that a mutiny had developed among her "human freight" at sea with the result then there had been battles aboard for control of the ship and suffered a mortality of 137 coolies. Signed lower right "Conrad Freitag 260 No. 7th St. Brooklyn E.D. N.Y." Conrad Freitag (American, 1845-1895). Freitag was enlisted in the Civil War in 1862, wounded in 1863, and mustered out in 1865. The artist's name can be found spelled Freitag and Frietag. Relined. Oil on canvas, 25 1/4 " x 37 1/4 ". Illustrated and described on p. 5Pilot Lore From Sail to Steam. NY, 1922
