NOTE

Born in Cornwall, Holman is known for his dramatic naval scenes which convey both the power of war and the sea. His most notable works include views of Barrington's Capture at St. Lucia, 1778, and a Royal Naval Brig with Captured American Rebel Vessels. In addition to his naval depictions, Holman created more docile views of shipping yards along the Thames and other river scenes. Working in and around London in the late 18th Century, his fashionable style earned him opportunities to exhibit his work in institutions such as the Free Society of Artists (1767-1772) and the Royal Academy (1774-1784). In later years, Holman became the teacher of Thomas Luny (1759-1837), who was also from Cornwall.
