Surprisingly little is known of Francis Holman despite his being one of the most important marine painters of the 18υth Century. He was an industrious artist, and he produced views of shipyards, sea actions, ship portraits as well as general shipping scenes, and he exhibited at the Royal Academy every year between 1774 and 1784. Thomas Luny was one of his pupils, and similarities with Holman can be seen in Luny's early work.
