Lot 568: FRANCISCO HERRERA THE ELDER | The Visitation

The canvas has been relined. The picture appears to have been cleaned and the paint surface is in good condition, with some thinning in the browns and greys of the background but otherwise the figures and drapery still largely retaining their impasto. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals areas of restoration throughout, including along the length of all four margins, and in particular the lower and the left-hand margin. A horizontal band of restoration to an old tear, measuring 18 cm. in length, runs along Virgin's upper chest. There are two repaired damages to the canvas, all in the lower quartile of the picture, measuring 8 cm. and 9 cm. respectively. An L-shaped horizontal tear measuring 14 cm. can be found below the Virgin's right foot. The work is offered in a carved, gilt frame which, despite some minor chips, is in overall good condition.
