Notes

Although perhaps best known as the master and father-in-law to the young Diego de Silva y Velázquez, as well as author of his seminal work on the theory of painting Arte de la Pintura, Francisco Pacheco was a successful artist in his own right. The present work belongs to the final phase of his career and reflects the strict iconographical orthodoxy which he strongly advocated in his writings.
