NOTE

The painting is a study for one of the six lunettes relating to the story of Mary Magdalene that decorate the apse of La Madeleine in Paris. The final composition is in the center of the right hand group of three, each measuring over 19 by 39 feet. Francois Bouchot was one of six artists chosen for this major commission by Paul Delaroche on February 13, 1836. Marie Madeleine au pied de la croix represents the three Marys torn between the emotions of hope and despair. At left, floating in celestial light is the figure of Christ while to the right, glowing with red, with which the artist prepared the right-hand surface of the canvas, are the bodies of the dead rising from their tombs.
