This is a preparatory sketch for Heim's large canvas painted in 1836 for the church of Notre Dame de Lorette, Paris, which remains in situ today.

Another preparatory work sold Paris, Tajan, 30 November 1990, lot 134. This latter was confused with the present work at the 1995 sale and was thus erroneously included in the provenance at that time.
