Description

Franklin Brooke Voss (American, 1880 - 1953), "Twenty Grand," etching/mezzotint on paper, signed lower left and numbered 175/260 at lower right, printed in New York in 1934 by "At the Sign of the Gosden Head," measures 18.50 x 23 inches unframed, 21 x 25.50 inches framed in black and gilt decorated frame. CONDITION: Good, a few light foxing marks in the margins. Twenty Grand was a famous Lexington, Kentucky bred racehorse that belonged to Mrs. Payne Whitney who saw his debut in a race at Jamaica, Long Island, New York in 1928. Franklin Brooke Voss was born in New York City in 1880 and attended the Art Students League of New York, where George Bridgman was his teacher. He was commissioned paintings by the Whitneys, Riddles, Vanderbilts, Phippses, Wideners, and Willis Sharpe Kilmer and famous horses, including Man o' War, Equipoise, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Sir Barton and Whirlaway.
