Item Overview

Description

-Franz Pforr(Frankfurt 1788-1812) and Joseph Wintergerst (Wallenstein 1783-1867 Düsseldorf) Götz and brother Martin, from Goethe's "Götz von Berlichingen", scene 2, I. Akt, gouache over pencil, on paper, 20.6 x 14.1 cm, laid down, lightly fixed to support, mounted and framed, (Sch) According to a certificate by Prof. Dr. Phil. Dr. H. C. Jens Christian Jensen, the present motif and the tracing based on it are works by Franz Pforr, whereas the colouring was done by Joseph Wintergerst. Pforr had made tracings of the ten designs for the illustrations of Goethe's "Götz von Berlichingen" before sending them to Goethe in Weimar, in order to be able to continue working on them. Pforr was a member of the Lukasbund and had joined Wintergerst and Friedrich Overbeck in the abandoned monastary of S. Isidoro. According to Jensen, Wintergerst, having attended to Pforr until the latter's death, had certainly preserved parts of Pforr's estate, including ten tracings. Eight of these tracings had survived in the Lahman Collection and were split up between the Bremen Kunsthalle and the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden after Lahmann's death. Two of the tracings are missing - the scenes "Götz and Brother Martin" and "Tavern and Peasant's Wedding". According to Jensen, the colouring cannot have been done by Pforr. The execution of figures, the narrow space and the colourful impression of the composition speak for Wintergerst, who occupied himself with Pforr's themes also in his later works.
