Fred Appleyard was a talented landscape and portrait painter. Born in Middlesbrough, he went on to study at Scarborough School of Art under Albert Strange, before continuing his studies at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. His most notable achievement was the mural decoration he completed for the Royal Academy Refreshment Room in 1903. He worked in South Africa between 1910-12 and during the Great War he worked at the Woolwich Arsenal. He exhibited a total of forty-one works at the Royal Academy (1900-35) and several more at the Royal West of England Academy (1918-50). He died in Hampshire in 1963, aged 88.
