Description

The Nevadan (with American flag, and AH flag for American-Hawaiian Steamship Co.), oil on canvas, signed 'Fred Pansing' (lower left), Christie's label verso, 28x48in. including painted border, metal frame, Opening Bid $5000 Condition: UV light reveals inpainted spot (2x1.25") above left of bow, two (.5") spots above and below ship toward stern, else a few minor scattered spots, also retouch to bottom edge of green border, relined, protective backing board. Provenance: Property of a gentleman, bequeathed by his father who was an executive at the American-Hawaiian Steamship Co. This painting hung in his office in New York City for many years and was gifted to him upon his retirement in 1968. Offered by Christie’s, New York, Rockefeller Center, February 1, 2006, Sale 1622, Lot 229, unsold. Note: According to a New York Times article dated Jan. 22, 1902, the Nevadan was launched on Jan. 21, 1902 in Camden NJ. It was built for the American Hawaiian Steamship Company. It was 371 feet long, and 46 feet in beam. Her tonnage was 5,800 and had a speed of thirteen knots. According to the book "The Engineering Index, Volume 4" the Nevadan was the first oil burning steamship built in the United States. In October of 1910 the New York Times reported that the Nevadan nearly sank due to failure of her stern bearings but was saved by quick work by her chief engineer and crew.

BUYER'S PREMIUM & SALES TAX:
A buyer's premium of 25% will be added to the purchase price of every item sold. The purchaser must also pay New Jersey sales tax on the total purchase price, including premium, unless a tax-exempt certificate is completed and on file with us, or if merchandise is shipped out of state (outside New Jersey).

1. Although some condition reports are included in this catalog, they do not document every condition defect that may be present. It is the responsibility of prospective bidders to thus inquire before deciding their level of interest.

2. Neither the auctioneer, nor the consignor, is responsible for the accuracy of any printed or verbal descriptions. All weights and measurements are approximate.

3. Notwithstanding the preceding condition, if within 30 days of the sale of any lot, the purchaser notifies LEIGHTON that the lot so sold is a counterfeit and satisfies LEIGHTON with proof, LEIGHTON will rescind the sale and the purchase price will be refunded. This condition is subject to the lot being returned to LEIGHTON in the same condition as when sold.

4. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid and shall advance the bid at his/her own discretion. A discretionary reserve of fifty percent of the low estimate will apply to most lots. Items may be withdrawn at any time prior to the offering of each lot.

5. In the event of a dispute, the decision of the auctioneer and the record of sale kept by the auction house are the sole and final remedy.

6. LEIGHTON reserves the right to advertise the selling price (with photo) of any lot.
