This work was painted at Porlock in the early 1860s and is recorded thus in Ernest Mills's monograph:

'Exquisite in it's poetic feeling and harmony is thie little watercolour- a country chold in faded blue pinafore, sitting on a stile in hawthorn time, listening entranced to the song of an unseen bird.'
