FREDERICK ETCHELLS, 1886-1973 GUNWALLOE 44.5 x 30cm.; 17.5 x 11.75in signed pen, ink, watercolour and gouache Provenance: Miss Agnew Bedford; A.H.Hodding, Esq.; William Darby, London; Anthony d'Offay, London; Purchased from the above by the present owner in 1983 Exhibited: London, Tate Gallery, Wyndham Lewis and Vorticism, 1956, no.167 Literature & References: The Tyro, no.2, 1922, illustrated, pl XII; Richard Cork, Vorticism and Abstract Art in the First Machine Age, Vol.2, London 1976, p.545, illustrated Note: The present work is amongst the artist's final paintings executed before he changed career to become an architect. Etchells recalled that Gunwalloe was 'done about 1922 when I spent some 2 or 3 weeks at Gunwalloe with Charlie Ganner... and other minor high-brows of the period' (Etchells in letter to R.Cork, 21st March 1971, in R.Cork (1976) p.545).
