Provenance: sold by the son of the artist. This was painted during the First World War when Fred Chivers was serving in France with the Royal Medical Corps. He had developed considerable skill as a fruit and flower painter at Royal Worcester, leaving the factory to enlist in 1914. On his return to England in 1918 Fred Chivers approached Coalport for employment, showing paintings such as the present lot as evidence of his individual style.
