Provenance: sold by the son of the artist. During the 1930s Fred Chivers worked briefly for Paragon China and then for the King Street factory in Derby. He returned to Royal Worcester briefly in 1940-41, painting fruit once more while many of the younger painters had themselves enlisted in the forces. When production ceased at Worcester he continued to help the war effort, working for a local engineering firm painting machinery battleship grey.
