FREDERICK HORSMAN VARLEY, A.R.C.A.SUMMER TIME, RUSSIA, 1955graphite and watercoloursigned, Varley Inventory no.234 11 ins x 15 ins; 26.7 cms x 38.1 cms Provenance:Walter Klinkhoff Gallery, Montreal Private Collection, TorontoLiterature:“What Two Canadian Artists Saw in Russia”, McLeans magazine, October 1, 1954.Note:In 1954, Varley and fellow-artist Eric Aldwinkle visited the Soviet Union as guests of the state with stops in Moscow, Georgia, the Black Sea and (then) Leningrad. Some of the sketches he executed, not unlike the figures depicted in this lot, were reproduced in a 1954 McLeans article that reported on the visit. The article noted that at the time “Certainly they (Varley and Aldwinckle) are the only Canadian artists ever to set up their easels at the very gates of the Kremlin...”Estimate: $3,500–4,000
