Some of the sketches he executed, not unlike the figures depicted in this lot, were reproduced in a 1954 McLeans article that reported on the visit. The article noted that at the time “Certainly they (Varley and Aldwinckle) are the only Canadian artists ever to set up their easels at the very gates of the Kremlin...”Estimate: $3,500–4,000
