Frederick Williams visited Greece in 1829 and three other works by the artist from that year have appeared at sale; Grabusa, Crete, The temple of Neptune at Corinth and The temple of Panhellenius, Aegina.

The present lot was painted just a few years after the 1825 Battle of Lerna Mills during the Greek War of Independence and Ibrahim Pasha's subsequent retreat to the Plains of Argos.
