NOTE

Frederik Carl Emil von Scholten (1796-1853), Danish Naval officer and artist, was customs inspector in Frederiksted (Danish West Indies) and brother to Peter von Scholten, governor of the Danish West Indies, who freed the slaves. He travelled intensely and made a number of drawings on his travels to Europe, America and the West Indies. A collection of two sketchbooks is held in a Danish Naval Museum.
The Knevels family (picture no. 3) has relations to the West Indies: a certain Isaac Adrian Knevels of St. John, died in that area in 1876, 72 years old.
