Item Overview

Description

G. Parminter (fl.1847) British. 'The Old Poultry Cross, Salisbury', Watercolour, Signed and Titled on a label verso, 15" x 12". Provenance; Exhibited Royal Academy 1848, label verso, 'Bought at ........, Mr Loder's sale 1848 lot 218. Note; The Poultry Cross in Salisbury was rebuilt and remodelled in 1852. Parminter was a London architect, and may have entered a competition to redesign the cross, painting this view of its old state for comparison. The picture was Parminter's sole exhibit at the RA, and the Loder's were a prominent family in Salisbury for many years. All the other buildings in the picture are still there today, including the 'Haunch of Venison', the oldest pub in Salisbury, just hidden from view behind the cross.
