Item Overview

Description

Gabriel Fernandez Ledesma Mexico 1900-1983 Original Oil On Canvas Signed. 37" X 36 "x 1 1/2 Gabriel Fernandez Ledesma was born in 1900. In 1917 he came to Mexico City on a scholarship, from the government of his home state, to study at the Academy of San Carlos where he was a student of Leandro Izaguirre, Carlos Lazo and Saturnino Herrán. In 1922, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro as an assistant to Roberto Montenegro, who had commissioned the decoration of the Pavilion of Mexico in Brazil. Upon his return, education minister José Vasconcelos named him artistic director of the Ceramic Pavilion of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences. Opposed to the impressionist training that was taught in the Outdoor Painting Schools, he rejected the address that Alfredo Ramos Martínez had offered him from one of them. Instead, Fernández Ledesma, his brothers and Guillermo Ruiz conceived the creation of the School of Sculpture and Direct Size. In that school the aim was to abolish the idea of art for art, to promote popular art and to impart education to workers and children. At the same time, he created an engraving workshop with which he promoted the development of graphics in Mexico. In 1929, he was commissioned to travel to Spain and take an exhibition of the Outdoor Painting Schools and the Popular Centers to the Seville Fair. He was a founding member of the League of Writers and Revolutionary Artists (LEAR) in 1934 and head of the editorial office of the Secretariat of Public Education the following year. In 1940 he collaborated with Miguel Covarrubias in the realization of the exhibition "20 centuries of Mexican art" that was presented in New York. In 1969, he received a scholarship from the Guggenheim Foundation and in 1975 he received the José Guadalupe Posada Medal in Aguascalientes. In 1982, a year before his death, the important exhibition "Artist and Cultural Promoter, Gabriel Fernández Ledesma" was presented at the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
