GARCÍA LORCA, FEDERICO Autograph letter signed, 1 page (6 5/8 x 5 1/4 in.; 143 x 134 mm), in Spanish, [New York, 1 October 1929], to Herschel and Norma Brickell; horizontal fold, minimal wear and soiling. Autograph envelope; some tears and browning. Maroon buckram folding-case, morocco gilt lettering-piece on spine.

The poet García Lorca arrived in New York in June 1929. He soon established a close friendship with Herschel Brickell, literary critic of the New York Herald and manager of the publisher Henry Holt and Company, and his wife Norma. After a late summer stay in New England, the poet returned to the city and wrote to the Brickells, "I have spent a long time in the country, longer than I thought. Even though I have kept Spanish silence I have not stopped remembering you with true affection. I would like to spend a little time in your friendly company. I live in John Jay Hall at Columbia University where I'm taking five courses ...." It was during the autumn of 1929 that Lorca's friendship with the Brickells deepened, culminating with Christmas holidays spent together before the poet embarked for Cuba.
