At first, the landscape painter, etcher and lithographer August Christian Geist was a student of his father, painter Andreas Geist. He later continued his studies with Fritz Bamberg in Munich. He found his early motifs in the area of the Rhoen, the region of the Starnberger lake, the region of Poling and the Franconian Switzerland. After an extensive journey in Rome he found them also in the Roman Campagna. In 1860 he met J.W.Schirmer in Karlsruhe who influenced his work. Regnet describes the main characteristics of his work as charming and idyllic. "Das Weiche und Gefällige in Form und Farbe liegt ihm entsprechend näher als das Strenge, Mächtige; das Ruhige entspricht seinem Wesen mehr als das Bewegte". [The soft and pleasing in form and colour lies more in his nature than the strict and powerful; the peacefulness is more in his character than the turbulent].
