Item Overview

Description

Signed & Numbered Limited Edition Print by Geoff Hunt. The Battle of St. Vincent. 14th February 1797, #629 of an edition of 700. Numbered and signed in pencil and personalized by the artist. Professionally framed and double matted at the gallery. Measures 28 1/2"x29"x1" in frame. Weight 11 pds. From Geoff Hunt's spectacular series of prints depicting dramatic naval actions associated with the War of Independence and the War of 1812. The Henry B. Hyde was launched in November of 1884 at the Chapman & Flint yard in Bath, Maine. Built for the lucrative San Francisco trade she rounded the Horn 16 times and, was generally considered the finest "Downeaster" ever built. At 267 LOA, 45 foot beam and 2,583 ton, she is shown here making ready for her maiden voyage. This was a treacherous prospect during Maine's brutal winter as the frequent Northeasters took the lives of many sailors. From 1966 - 1970, Geoff Hunt studied graphic design at Kingston and Epsom Schools of Art. After two years in advertising, he became a freelance artist and designer. He was art editor of the Warship Journal from 1977 - 1979, and typographer/designer on many books on marine subjects. Now dedicated to painting full-time, he is a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston, SC Estate
